PROFILES

They say you can’t teach and old dog new tricks, but as I have recently found out you most definitely can. When we build houses, extensions, garden and boundary walls and practically anything that contains a brick we use a spirit level. It’s the brickies friend and closest Allie, it keeps everything plumb and level and is used every time you build a corner. What I have found out recently is that more builders are starting to use what’s called in the trade, a “profile” which is basically a 3 metre long 40mm by 40mm piece of box section aluminium. This profile has taken over the job of the level, in that once it has been set up at the side of the brick work, you can simply lift your line up and run the brickwork in. There’s even marks on the steel at the correct gauge, so you don’t even have to measure to make sure that the building is still level. It turns out they have been using these profiles over in Australia for over 20 years!! The best part about not having to build corners is that  with the profile been a solid piece of metal you never have a corner go out of plum or level and your always running the brick work in, so there’s no time lost spent building them, they are amazing. They don’t replace the bricklayer as you still need to set the job out and set the profiles up, but once there up you could teach someone who has never built before to run bricks into a line in a day. I for one won’t ever build a job without them again. I’m always up for learning new things and ways to make my life easier, and they don’t come easier than that
