“How-To“
This month we are having a change to the blog; instead of writing about the job at hand we’re going to be writing a “How-To“ series starting this month talking about how to build a garden wall.
The first thing to do when starting to build your garden wall is to dig a footing for it. If you’re only going a metre or 2 high, then a trench 30cm wide and 30cm deep should suffice.
Next you want to fill it up to nearly the top, best to leave it down a couple inch so you can’t see the concrete and only see nice brick popping out of the ground. It wants to be a strong mix of concrete, that’s sand gravel and cement, there’s ratios online to find out how to mix it… that, or you can buy it pre mixed and add water to it.
Next we are onto the bricks. You need to know whether you’re building a single or double brick wall, for this blog we will assume it’s a single one. The next thing to do is build a rake of brickwork, bob your string line on and run them in, sounds easy doesn’t it? It’s not as easy as it sounds!
Unfortunately it’s rather hard to explain it on this blog but I will link a video which will explain what I’m talking about at the bottom of this entry.
When the walls been built to the desired height that you are requiring, you need to finish the top of the wall with a masonry product. One for the finish and another to stop rain water from getting into the holes and potentially ruing the brickwork.
