Insulation in your property
Hey there monthly blog readers how are we all doing? I myself have become a puddle since melting in what turned out to be 39 degrees in Wakefield, a new record for Yorkshire and the uk in general. The riveting blog this week is all about insulation … so let’s begin.
As radiation beams down from space through our atmosphere and onto my house I am slightly thankful for owning an older home. The reason being is that my house has no insulation in the walls. Houses pre 1990 didn’t have to have cavity walls, which obviously is bad for a number of reasons, which I will list now,
No insulation means no heat trapping. When you turn the heat on in your house the insulation in the walls and roof space traps the heat from escaping, this keeps your house nice and toasty in winter, but without this in your it would be cold and require more heating like mine. The regulations for new houses is
100 mm rockwool sheets for the walls
200 mm rockwool quilt for the floor
And 300 mm rockwool quilt for the loft space and you wonder why your house is nice and warm in winter
The second point of having insulation , is that it acts as a barrier between the outside wall and the inside. Pre 1950, houses was built with no cavity, they have brick outside and brick inside with an inch in between. If the mortar on the outside was to fail, then the damp or rain could permeate through the brick joint and pass straight through to the plaster on the inside. It’s a reason why most old terrace houses have had some sort of black mold before. It wasn’t as much of a problem before, when old houses had open coal fires, as they had wooden floors which let droughts up which in turn pulled moisture and fire up the chimney, but as times gone on people have got rid of open fires and caused damp issues in houses that never had them. But that’s a whole other blog for another time 🙂
The last point I will make for insulation is noise. It’s an excellent dampener of sound, loud noises inside and outside can be heard much easier than a modern house with proper insulation

But I tell you what, when the sun heats it up like it has done this weekend, because of no insulation it makes for a very cool house in a very hot Wakefield!!
Still going to get air con next year tho 🙂
